Sunday 31 July 2016 2 – 6pm, FREE
On the green behind Newington Community Centre, Princess Margaret Avenue, Ramsgate CT12 6HX
In 2015, the Newington community held its first arts festival, Best Fest, showcasing a whole range of interactive arts and creativity for all ages. Following the success of this inaugural festival, the second Best Fest will be held behind Newington Community Centre on 31 July 2016 from 2pm – 6pm and it’s bigger and better!
Best Fest is a community-led arts festival supported by People United and Newington Big Local exploring the best of us as human beings and how we can live well together and celebrate kind and caring communities.
Best Fest will feature some of the favourite activities from last year including:
The Imagination Lab
The Imagination Lab is a domed structure inside which children and their families can dream of what our world might look like in the future. In this unique space, commissioned by People United in association with Institute of Imagination in 2015, participants will be able to create a stop frame animation film on iPads to bring their ideas to life. For more information see peopleunited.org.uk/commission/imagination/
Continuing to build the archive of images of Newington’s past and present, bring your photos along to the Community Centre and have them scanned by the SEAS Photography team (South East Archive Seaside Photography).
New for 2016:
The Best of Us: local groups and organisations showcase
This year, Best Fest will highlight the brilliant work of local groups and organisations from Thanet. All the groups are offering free and interactive activities for all ages. Have a go at some sensory play activities with Thanet Children’s Centre, make friendship bracelets with West Kent Housing, contribute to a large canvas that will represent friendship in the community with Age UK and try using some of Pie Factory’s equipment to produce your own beats and cool sounds, plus many more activities to choose from.
Kindness Investigation Sensory System (KISS)
Is Newington a kindness hotspot? A team of artists and creative researchers have been designing a Kindness Investigation Sensory System (KISS) that will be presented for the first time at the festival. Find out what kindness sounds, smells and feels like in this fantastic sensory installation.
Music and Entertainment
Throughout Best Fest, there will be a programme of music and entertainment – including:
U’Zambezi Arts who specialise in songs, drum rhythms, dances and instrumental music styles from the southern African region. The musicians are multi-talented artists whose work has taken them into countries such as Canada, all over the USA, every country in Europe including the UK and all across southern Africa.
Sing Your Heart Out – Thanet’s newest singing group will share songs of friendship, love and perseverance. Sing Your Heart Out is an intergenerational choir that began in June 2016.
Royal Airforce Air Cadets 2433 (Ramsgate & Manston) Squadron Marching Band who are currently Kent Wing Champions and have also been judged the best in London and the South East.
DJs and Spitting – Crucial Arts Productions present two local DJs, Tobias and Tel-Funktion. Plus Iyah Forces, a young local grime group, will be spitting some bars.
Everything at Best Fest is free. Bring a picnic and take your time to experience a community coming together to celebrate the Best of Us.
