January 20, 2014

We are delighted to launch the second year of our Artists’ Commissions programme to take place in 2014. In collaboration with Manchester Museum and Lunsford Primary School we are looking for two artists who can create vibrant and stimulating work that can help develop a kinder and more caring society.

After a very successful commission period last year, based on the themes of ’empathy’, ‘belonging’ and ‘values’, we want to continue to explore how the arts might sow the seeds for kindness to grow, and develop our learning about the potential of the arts to inspire positive social change. We are looking for artists who want to broaden and develop themselves as artists, and who enjoy learning from other disciplines in order to inform and influence their practice.

The EMPATHY commission for People United was hugely helpful to me as an artist…I was given free artistic rein – genuinely, respected as an artist from the outset and never felt censored. That’s not to say feedback wasn’t given – it was, and it was very useful in shaping the work. I was able, as a result, to experiment with elements of my practice that I had wanted to do for a long time. I stretched and developed myself as an artist, transforming my practice in a way that I will benefit from in other work I do.
