Close your eyes – if you could imagine you are sitting anywhere in the world, where would that be?

Sunday 31 August 2014 saw the fifth Giant Picnic take place in Herne Bay’s Memorial Park. It’s hard to believe that it has been five years since we first organised the first Giant Picnic to celebrate the end of We All Do Good Things, but it is a legacy that we are very proud of and continue to support. It was wonderful to see all the community groups and organisations gathering together to provide interactive activities, with many people bring ing their picnics to enjoy with their families.

As part of the event we ran an activity that encouraged people to meet someone they didn’t know and created a giant linked conversation. 72 people took part and met a new person, asking them where they live and what they love, and then choosing a random question from our giant box they had a chat. One person then left the conversation and a new person joined in creating a chain of conversations. We were delighted that the stimulus questions (for example: around life lessons, belly laugh stories, childhood memories or where you would love to be) enabled some really in depth conversations, bringing different ages and backgrounds together.

Meanwhile, our wonderful associate artist Lucy Steggals set up a Swing Study from a nearby tree asking people working with people to build a Herne Bay swing. Well done to Herne Bay in Bloom and all the wonderful community groups in Herne Bay who continue to support this fantastic event.
