People United are delighted to announce that the Heritage Lottery Fund has awarded a grant of £9,100 for a project based in Newington Ramsgate to research and record local histories. The Newington Big History project will train and support a group of residents to uncover and bring to life the rich and varied histories, past and present, of the people and communities who live or have lived in Newington, Ramsgate.

This group of residents will become Newington’s Big History Ambassadors, a core group who will lead the project alongside People United. The group will have access to training and activities to help them uncover the stories behind Newington. This training will include workshops with oral history experts who will give the ambassadors the skills to find and record local histories. They will also meet other local history groups and visit places further afield to widen their knowledge base. Through this process the ambassadors will learn how to capture and tell the stories in an imaginative and engaging way.

We envisage the group to comprise a mix of age ranges with varied life experiences but all with a keen interest in local heritage. Membership of the group will be open and inclusive and anyone who lives in Newington will be welcome.

Find out more about this exciting opportunity on Saturday 1st August 2015, when local artist/puppeteer Estelle Rosenfeld will be running a drop in workshop at Newington Community Centre called Home Grown Heroes. She will be collecting images and memories from Newington and would like as many people as possible to bring photos of local heroes both past and present. This could be a relative, the next door neighbour, a teacher or a shop keeper, in fact anyone you care about or who has made a good impression on you or your family. These photos will be scanned and the stories behind them saved. Estelle will then teach people how to make cut out puppets of their hero. There’s no need to book a place just come along on the day, but if you would like more information about joining Newington’s Big History Ambassadors or the Home Grown Heroes workshop please email: [email protected]

People United’s Creative Producer Sarah Fox says:

This workshop is taking place during the Newington Big Local’s Family Fun Day at Newington Community Centre when there will be many other activities taking place between 12 noon – 6pm.
