This week more tests. In toilets and on the street. I’m trying to create an audio piece that will be playing in the toilets at the Festival Hall – one women’s, one men’s. It’s a piece about cycling to work, and how catching people’s eye is so important, but also about the thoughts that pass through my mind, the knee jerk irritation at other people’s actions that then abates within a few yards and I regret the filthy look I gave or the muttered ‘honestly’. It’s also about gender.
What I’ve realised is it has to be recorded live, after the event it doesn’t hold the same quality of communication, it feels contrived. The momentary has to be captured in the moment.
What I’ve also learned is I have an unexpected stutter……
Sarah Carne’s This is a Public Service Announcement is taking place during the Festival of Love (6 June – 31 August 2015) at Southbank Centre.
