August 5, 2015

As part of Newington Big Local’s Family Fun Day on Saturday 1st August 2015, local artist/puppeteer Estelle Rosenfeld ran a drop in workshop at Newington Community Centre. The workshop, Home Grown Heroes, was supported by some of the Creative Champions who have been meeting every Thursday evening at Dame Janet Primary Academy for The Best of Us project.

The activity asked visitors to bring a photograph of someone who they admired or cared about to create an articulated puppet. Thinking about the stories connected to the people, each puppet was placed in a category reflecting their story, this included; Wisdom and Knowledge, Justice, Courage, Humanity and Temperance. The puppets made at the event and by the Creative Champions will be part of an exhibition during Best Fest which will happen later this year in October.

This event was part of the Newington Big History project which will train and support a group of residents to uncover and bring to life the rich and varied histories, past and present, of the people and communities of Newington, Ramsgate, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
