Thanet Sound Crowd
A new vocal ensemble group
All Welcome

Thanet Sound Crowd is an exciting new vocal ensemble supported by People United and Newington Big Local and funded by Roger De Haan Charitable Trust and The Trusthouse Charitable Foundation.

This vocal ensemble explores the ways in which we use our voice to make sounds. From singing popular music to creating sound effects for films, Thanet Sound Crowd is about enjoying being creative together and having lots of fun. The group will also work towards performances, both traditional and ‘guerrilla’ style. Thanet Sound Crowd is led by Ramsgate resident Filipe Gomes, a composer and sound artist. Although he’s primarily known for his installation and theatre work, Filipe has a wealth of experience in working in the community, having coordinated a number of projects across Kent. He’s a multi-instrumentalist and is the founder of Arco Barco Studio in Ramsgate Harbour.

The group came about after local resident Marie Thomas, a keen singer, wanted to develop a community singing group in Newington. Marie gathers a group of local residents every Christmas to go carol singing, but wanted to develop something more regular. If you’re interested in singing, making noise, exploring rhythm and having fun with others, then this is truly not to be missed, come along whether you are new to singing or have previous experience. The group is open to anyone aged 8 years plus and welcomes people from across Thanet (under 11s must be accompanied by an adult).

“There are so many benefits to singing; it’s great for the mind, body and soul! Studies prove that singing is really good for your heart; it also helps improve mental health, plus is great for the social aspect too. As well as these, singing can also help to break inter-generational and other barriers down and is of course an international “language”.” Marie Thomas, Newington Community Centre Manager

The group meets every Thursday at Newington Community Centre in Ramsgate from 5pm until 6.30pm. It is free to attend although any donations towards venue hire are much appreciated.
