Hut 38 Residency

People United is offering its beach hut in Herne Bay to local organisations and individuals interested in creative approaches towards caring for themselves, each other and our coastal environments.

This residency is open to anyone who lives or works on the East Kent Coast, including local organisations, individuals, artists, creatives, care workers, youth workers, and anyone who wants space and time to explore creative approaches to caring.

Hut 38 is available from June to end of October 2026, on Saturdays, Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays.

When to apply

We (the People United team) will be continually reviewing applications once a month, for the following month. You will also be able to apply for later months too, as we’ll release a selection of dates early! Below are your deadlines to apply for a residenct at Hut 38:

If you want to be a resident at Hut 38 in June, apply by 12:00pm Monday 18 May. We will let you know by Wednesday 20 May. 

If you want to be a resident at Hut 38 in July, apply by 12:00pm Monday 15 June. We will let you know by Wednesday 17 June. 

If you want to be resident at Hut 38 in August, apply by 12:00 Monday 20 July. We will let you know by Wednesday 22 July.

If you want to be a resident at Hut 38 in September or October, apply by 12:00pm Monday 7 September. We will let you know by Wednesday 9 September.

Then you can fill in an Application Form. 

As an alternative, we are very happy to receive a video (3 mins max). We suggest sending this to us via We Transfer, which is a free online platform that makes it easy to send larger files. Our email is [email protected].

If you are selected

  • You will need public liability insurance of up to ÂŁ5 million (for groups and events involving the public). You can get Public Liability insurance through Artist’s Union England  
  • You will need to complete an evaluation form following your time at Hut 38 
  • We ask that you send us photo and/or a video of what you got up to in Hut 38. This will be used for our social media (Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn). 

Hut 38 Facilities

Please be aware there is no electricity, heating or running water at the hut. There are facilities to make hot drinks and tables, chairs, a beach umbrella etc and a battery powered light. There is a trolley for transporting equipment and water.  

The closest public toilets and drinking water refill point are at the Kings Hall, about a 5–10-minute walk from the hut. 

Mobile phone signal near the hut is weak. It is fine near the Kings Hall. 

Access

The hut is accessible from the downs via steps or along the promenade there is level access. There is no vehicle access to the hut, it can be approached on foot or by bike or mobility scooter.  The hut is situated on the promenade and there is one step up into the hut. There are steps opposite the hut onto the pebble beach. 

We will give you a detailed Welcome Pack that shows you how to get to Hut 38 and get the keys. We won’t have someone there to guide you, and your and the hut’s health, safety and security will be your responsibility.
