Zine Makers Call Out – PAID
Queer Coastal Zines Call Out
People United will be commissioning seasonal-inspired Queer Coastal Zines. We’ll be working with Queer communities and artists – from Herne Bay to Dover – to produce zines informed by their relationship to the coast. Our core values at People United are justice, community and care. So we’re exploring and platforming how our coastal communities use creativity to care for themselves, each other and the world around them.
If you know an artist, send them this link! Share our call out far and wide across our coastal communities for this paid opportunity to reflect, make, and share what being Queer here means to you.
This is a paid opportunity. We will be selecting 3 people to make their zine. All successful applicants will be awarded a £1000 artist fee.
Brief
We are inviting LGBTQ+ artists based in East Kent to create a zine on their relationship to solidarity, solitude, and all things solar — to be produced by summer solstice. You can respond to one or all of the themes.
Phase 1: Summer solstice May – June
This call out is just for the summer solstice edition. We will also be looking for zine makers for the winter solstice later on in the year. This is to celebrate our seasons and give more time to those who might need it. We will run another call-out with the same theme in October.
Phase 2: Winter solstice November – December (applications not open yet).
Who can apply?
You must identify as LGBTQ+ artists and live in East Kent (from Whitstable to Folkstone).
Artists from underrepresented groups will be prioritised and we encourage folks who have not made a zine before to reach out for guidance, questions and support.
How to apply
Fill in an application form to apply.
In case you’re including anything sensitive or personal, we want you to know who will be reviewing your work. This will be our Project Lead, Erin Strawbridge, People United team members, Clare Callan and Sarah Hawke, and our panel of partners.
Application deadline
Apply by 12:00pm Friday 1 May 2026.
Application process
This is a paid opportunity. We will be selecting 3 people to make their zine. All successful applicants will be awarded a £1000 artist fee.
