People United’s new panel of advisors

Over the past year People United has created an award-winning programme of work in response to the Coronavirus pandemic, established an ambitious new mission, and redefined the core values of our organisation.

It’s also been a year of challenge and uncertainty for everybody. There is now even more relevance and urgency to our work – and we are poised to embark on the next stage of our journey.

To help us take these next steps we have established a new Advisor Panel. Its members will bring expert insight to the People United team and diversify the range of voices that will influence our work and direction. We are delighted to be able to share their details with you.

The four founding members of our panel of advisors are:

Suzanne Alleyne

Suzanne is a Cultural Thinker and heads up a cultural consultancy which combines strategic thinking across brand and change management with a cultural incubator. Her current work focuses on leadership, power, difference, wellbeing and society.

She is an inaugural Arts Council England Changemaker and the former inaugural Co-Chair of What Next?; a Churchill Fellow, a Fellow of the RSA and DEMOS, and an Achates brand ambassador. She is currently a visiting Research Associate and guest lecturer at King’s College London.

Ben Thurman

Ben is Policy and Development Officer for the Carnegie UK Trust, an organisation that exists to improve the wellbeing of people in the UK and Ireland. Over the past three years he has been leading a programme of work that has explored the importance of kindness for personal, community and societal wellbeing.

Outside of Carnegie UK Trust, Ben is the Convenor of Edinburgh Garden Partners, a community organisation that creates connections and builds relationships between people who want a space to grow and those who have garden space to share.

Professor Robin Banerjee

Robin is Head of the School of Psychology and a professor of developmental psychology at the University of Sussex.

He leads the CRESS (Children’s Relationships, Emotions, and Social Skills) research lab, which conducts investigations of children’s social and emotional functioning, and he works closely with practitioners and policymakers in the areas of education and mental health. Robin is also an Expert Advisor to Empathy Lab UK.

Maria Amidu

Maria Amidu is a UK-based visual artist and writer, developing national and international site-specific and public realm projects. She is a Winston Churchill Fellow, and currently a LAHP funded PhD Candidate at the Royal College of Art, London. Her artistic and writing concerns are influenced by the scope and significance of common experiences.

She is interested in the relationships between people and place and what is hidden, obscured or unspoken in various social situations, using these elements as a means to try to substantiate myriad lived experiences. Maria is a former People United Trustee.

We’re excited to work closely with our advisors who each bring their own unique skills, experience, and networks to the table.
