We are looking for an artist who…

  • Has experience of working collaboratively with members of the public, e.g. with groups or individuals in community settings, ideally with specific experience of collaborative or co-design projects with young people.
  • Has a design and fabrication practice, ideally with specific experience of making 3D, durable or interactive objects.
  • Is based in the Kent or the South-East (including London). We will prioritise artists who are living and/or working in Kent.

This is a collaboration with young people who have first-hand experience of navigating the UKā€™s asylum system. We are keen to work with an artist who has a working understanding of our current asylum system, whether indirect, direct or through lived or professional experience.

We are seeking an artist to work with the Co-Design Studio to make a climbable artwork for the highest climbing wall in the southeast.

To create this new work for audiences in Folkestone, East Kent, we are looking for an artist who can collaborate with the studio producers to design and fabricate an artwork using a variety of traditional (safety approved) climbing holds and plaques. The artwork will:

  • Draw inspiration from a collaborative poem titled ā€œHolding Onā€ created by KRAN members with support from award-winning poet Yomi Sode.
  • Explore the themes of ā€˜holding or hanging onā€™ and ā€˜pulling yourself upā€™.
  • Resonate with KRAN membersā€™ real-life experiences of navigating the UKā€™s asylum system.
  • Invite audiences to reflect on their own ideas around self-belief, not giving up, survival, using your strengths, and trying new things.
  • Have a modular design which can be experienced in multiple layouts. It is imagined that it will be reimagined multiple times, with components shifting on a regular basis to create new climbing routes ā€“ allowing regular visitors to encounter it differently each time.
